The convent of Our Lady of Good Counsel, founded by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus, is one of the
12 convent schools run by the order in Singapore. Initially, it comprised both primary and secondary schools
but the student enrolment soon outgrew the space available, and a separate secondary school,
St Joseph's Convent, was established in Hillside Drive.
The emphasis of convent schools is the academic and spiritual development of their students.
The importance of inculcating Christian moral values has always been a key feature of their
approach to education. The girls attend regular special masses at the adjacent church on
occasions such as the School Feast Day. Students are taught to love, respect, care for
and help one another.
Outside education, many of the sisters also serve the parish through their involvement
with the sick and elderly. For example, regular visits are made to the residents of
Ling Kwang and Cheshire Homes, and the infirmed elderly in their own homes. Working
within the auspices of the hospital's pastoral team, solace and comfort is brought to
those admitted to Mount Alvernia Hospital, while several sisters
are also invoilved in the care
of the aged in St Vincent's Home and the work of the Catholic Welfare Services in its outreach programme.
A few nuns also serve as Communion Ministers of the parish as well.
Above all these, prayer stands central to the life of the sisters and remains their source
of strength, inspiration and hope.
